PHILIPS, a leader in Digital Audio technology and inventor of the Compact Cassette (1963) and Compact Disc (with SONY in 1983) decided that a step forward must be taken in the field of home tape recording. The result was the DCC - Digital Compact Cassette a new format that allowed home users to record Digitally to a cassette tape while the format itself allowed users to playback their existing collection of Compact Cassettes in their new DCC machines. At first this seemed a logical decision as users were not forced to throw away their music collection of Compact Cassettes if they decided to "take a step forward in the new Digital world of recording"
